An update on the previous post. So I photoshopped the camera out, this one is much better. The shadow from the cabinet centres the image, and the graffiti partly shown on the right hand edge of the frame adds balance to the composition.

I went to this joint called Blue Tile Lounge on Friday to see some of Willis' mates doing some hip hop. Was a great place, nice street art painted on the walls, deep blue tiles around the bar area (sexy AND practical), and $4 Draught cans. This graffiti in the loos caught my eye, then I did a couple of self portraits. Unfortunately the best shot compositionally just caught the edge of my camera in the mirror, but then again I quite like the glance sideways in the one above, it gives atmosphere. My expression is a bit bemused, maybe I should have gone for the crackwhore look instead.

I found this drawing in an old sketchbook dated 1999. I really like the use of different coloured pens and the use of shading to indicate volume. This is something missing from my current drawing - lately everything is very flat-looking. I'd like to do more drawings from life like this one to work on my shading skills. The subject is my first teddy bear Bupa, so maybe nostalgia is another reason for liking the drawing so much.

A new leaf

Trying out some different colour schemes for my Barong head. At this stage I like the red and blue one first, but I'm also into the use of white in the pink-toned one. Perhaps I should do a larger study of the blue/red colour scheme including more white parts (it is awfully hard to leave white space when drawing this small!). I was inspired by some sketches I saw in the Pixar exhibition, which were fur studies of the big furry character in Monsters Inc. They tried orange and purple spots before settling on the blue used in the movie.
